Measure at home
No measuring tape? A piece of thread works just as well.
- Wrap a thread loosely around your neck and let it fall where you'd like the necklace to sit.
- Mark the point where the ends meet.
- Lay the thread flat against a ruler or tape and note the length.
- Already own a necklace you love? Lay it flat and measure it end to end, clasp included.
Choosing your necklace
Your neckline, height and occasion all play a part. A few things that help:
- Buying your first pearl strand? An 18-inch princess length with 6–7 mm pearls is the timeless choice.
- Petite frame? Princess length with smaller pearls keeps the look balanced.
- Taller or long-necked? Matinee and opera lengths show beautifully.
- Wearing a saree or lehenga? A choker or princess strand frames a deep blouse neckline.
- Want to layer? Pair lengths at least 2 inches apart, such as 16 and 18 inches, so each strand shows.
- Buying for a child? 14-inch strands with 4–5 mm pearls are light and comfortable.
